Horticultural oil. This oil is formulated to smother the insects by clogging up their tracheal tubes and get them as adults or in the egg or pupal stages too. It is applied before leaf break.because very few adults are about. Check out your local garden and supply stores. Catalogs are a good source.


The oil has no effect on the trees wounds. You could use the oil as a lubrint for your saw if you wished. It's main usage is as a dormant spray. I am experimenting with my pepper plants that I am over wintering in the house. They are producing peppers all year round. I started using cooking oil to spray the white flies and aphids. My results are variable because of so many factors that I didn't isolate when I first began. Basically it is working . I do have some unresolved glitches though. If they make it until May I'll deem it a success.

The use of the oil has no relation to pruning.





It's used to control scale insects. If you don't have them, it's a waste to apply it.





It can cause problems for the leaves and blossoms is why it's applied as a dormant spray, and the timing is really not critical.





Since you are using a pesticide (dormant oil is a pesticide) buy one that is approved for that use from a supplier in your area, follow label instructions.

we usually apply dormant oil the day after pruning is done but it could be done the same day. As others have said, there is no real relationship between applying dormant oil and pruning other than the fact if you apply the dormant oil before pruning you will waste time and insecticide since you would be taking up to 1/3 of the tree away
