Is is true that when you apply to a college they consiter how much your family makes in order to determin adm?

I was told that part of admissions for universities, they check your family income to see if you make enough money to attend their school. Is is true that when you apply to a college they consiter how much your family makes in order to determin adm?
Well, hmm... Actually... The other posters are incorrect. Some US universities DO consider your ability to pay for your education when they decide whether or not to admit you. Some do not.

This isn't something that's commonly known.

In the US, some universities have need-blind admissions for freshman. In other words, they admit you based on your grades and etc., without paying any mind to your ability to pay.

But many universities only do this for a certain segment of their applicants. For example, many schools admit all freshmen need-blind, but they may consider the ability to pay when admitted transfer students, and most do consider the ability to pay when admitting international students. In addition, if a freshman student is borderline - let's say, they might be waitlisted rather than admitted - then financial need can come into play.

I'll give an example: if student X and student Y are both on the wait list, and have the same SAT/GPA, but student X won't need financial aid in order to attend - then student X would be admitted.

I'll link you to an article that explains this, below. Is is true that when you apply to a college they consiter how much your family makes in order to determin adm?
roaring mice is correct. We were reading stuff about these ivy league schools and it is based on your family's financial competencies. you wont get into peperdine university unless your mom or dad is loaded. middle class are very unwlecome as not only they see it as degrading. but the fact that your able to give more to the school in the future if your mom or dad made millions than you would if you were a working class american. This is exactly how our president got into yale. His daddy donated a butt load of cash to them , to le his son in. thats how all this important people do it. its a capitalist country. Schools want money, thats why they are here. they are a buisiness. Hey Roaring Iam in Honors college now. go to a school that you think is honroable. thats my advice.
Universities are not allowed to use criteria such as race, religion, gender, sexual preference or financial to determine admissions - to do so would be considered discrimination and would subject the university to all SORTS of legal action.

What schools will do, however, is look at the amount of money your parents make when determining what kinds (and amounts) of financial aid you would qualify for. Trust me on this one: you want them to do it.
No. Universities do not look at family income as a part of admission. They look at family income as a part of financial aid/need.
The FAFSA (free application for student aid) requires things like tax returns to determine how much you can get in loans and grants.

It's a good thing!
