Because your nationality isn't on the automatic transfer list, you will need to sit a UAE driving test in order to be legally eligible to drive in the Emirates - regardless of whether you hold a valid driving license from your country of origin.

Step One is to obtain a learning permit - apply at the Traffic Police for the application form . The Traffic Police License Department is situated in the Muroor District, between Airport Road and East Road (Street No2 and No 4, entrance by Street 27). Tel. 02 444 8600.

You will need to bring with you:

Original passport (for inspection only)

Passport photocopy - personal details

Passport photocopy - visa / visit visa details

2 Passport sized photographs.

Dhs 40.

NoC of your Company

You will also be given an eye test at the Traffic Police. Eye test can be obtained from Al Noor Hospital on Khalifa Road (Street N03) (Access from Hamdan Street or Street N0 5 as well).

Step Two is to find a reputable driving school. Check the Yellow Pages. When your instructor feels that you are ready to take your test they will issue a letter to such effect and you should apply for a test. You will need to fill out the necessary application form.

Step Three you will be given three different tests on different dates:

The first is a Highway Code test

The second an ';internal'; test which includes garage parking, etc.

The third is a road test.

Once you pass all three tests you will be issued with a certificate, which you should take to the Traffic Police to apply for your permanent driving license.

For the driving license, keep in mind that it can take up to two months from the time you submit your application to the test date.
