How long do you have to be with your bank to apply for a Credit Card?

Heya.

I was just wondering how long do you have to be with your bank in order to apply for a Credit Card? I'm a customer at Lloyds TSB Offshore and think I've been with them for 2-3 years now.

There's no real time limit to have before applying for a credit card, however when you do apply they will look at your credit rating, age etc so if you tick all of the boxes you should be able to get one =DHow long do you have to be with your bank to apply for a Credit Card?
You don't have to be an existing customer of a bank to apply for a credit card.

The credit card companies will assess your credit history and decide if they will accept you. If you have had poor credit in the past, it is unlikely you will be accepted in the current climate.

You may also be declined if you have had no previous credit history as the card company will no be able to see if you have repaid debt properly in the past.
I believe you generally have to be 18 to apply for a credit card.

It really depends on the bank and how long you might have had an account with them. Two to three years with no bad checks or overdrafts should surely be sufficient to establish a decent credit score.

Not all banks do credit cards...it is a real liability at times. But yes, for a couple of years with the same bank, it sounds like they would have a good idea of your credit worthiness. Now if you wanted to get a credit card with Discover Card or American Express, it would take a bit more time and effort or questions, possibly, but I dare say they would approve you. They did me and I had no account with them until I applied. I have no account with them now (paid it off and closed it). They are pretty good about accepting new people - but don't expect a big balance you can ring up (they limit you until you show you can and do pay regularly) which takes about a year.

My advice is if you do get a card, pay it off in total each month to avoid finance charges. Use it once or twice a month but PAY IT OFF. That ticks them off since there is no finance charge, but they will give you a larger balance to run up and they hope you will take advantage of it and incur finance charges. I got wise to that - the one I have is totally paid off every month.
There's no particular length of time. You can apply now as long as are over 18. They will do a credit check, which won't show much if you haven't had a credit card before, though if you have been behind with rent / utility bills / any possible loan payments, that will show.
It really depends on what prospects, i have had my bank account for 15 years now (im only 15) and your parents/guardian's should get you a credit card when you are 17/18 but i certainly don't agree with younger than 17's getting one.
Hi there.

You can apply any time, if over 18, so if you want a card go for it. All they will do is credit check you so if clean, no problem.

Cheers, Steve.
